Cyan demonstrated its end-to-end solution for smart metering at Smart Energy conference, Delhi, ...

Cyan Technology, the Cambridge, UK-based wireless solutions company demonstrated a live communication link to a pilot installation of networked smart meters located in an industrial cluster in NOIDA, a suburb of Delhi. Using its CyLec wireless communication solution for electricity meters, comprising RF modules, gateways configured as Data Concentrator Units (DCUs) and communication software, Cyan was able to perform live retrieval of metering data and meter status including tamper alerts, and remote disconnect.

The solution demonstrated was developed in conjunction and cooperation with several leading Indian companies in the utility sector such as Capital Meters, Delhi, who supplied the wireless meters and Phoenix IT Solutions, Vizag whose mPower MDMS system was used to process the metering data. CyLec permits utilities to collect metering data live from the meters at preset times and to directly load the readings into a MDMS system that enables direct billing to be performed. This allows utilities to better understand the energy usage, generate customer bills and respond to customer queries based on up to date usage and billing data. With CyLec, the requirement for CMRI terminals to be carried to meters to obtain readings is also completely eliminated.

Cyan's live demo was a key component of the first day's proceedings at the conference. The demo was followed by a short Q&A and further detailed discussions with senior managers and key decision makers from utilities, suppliers, system integrators and meter manufacturing companies who attended the conference.

Bijan Mohandes, VP WW Sales and Marketing at Cyan Technology, who presented the live demo at the conference commented, "We selected a challenging, busy and noisy industrial environment for the pilot installation as we wanted to demonstrate the robust capabilities of CyLec. I am very pleased to report that the meter network was configured and made operational in a very short time. Anyone can demonstrate a network in a car park or other simple, controlled environments, but CyLec has been developed to work reliably in the real world”.

Mr Mohandes also added "Our CyLec pilot further confirms that smart metering in India requires good range and penetration. For this, wireless communications at 865/867MHz frequency is best suited allowing multiple overlapping meter networks operating over a 500m stretch of several city blocks. We use banking level security throughout our system, and it is scalable to multiple millions of meters in field deployed on multiple redundant servers".

Cyan Technology is located in the heart of Cambridge, UK’s leading multi-technology cluster and an acknowledged centre for wireless communication expertise and state of the art wireless products and solution development.
