An Extract

I suggest the president take a look at a modest country across the Atlantic that’s turning into the world leader in rethinking education for the 21st century.
That country is Portugal. Its economy in early 2005 was sagging, and it was running out of the usual economic fixes. It also scored some of the lowest educational achievement results in western Europe.
So Prime-Minister Jose Socrates took a courageous step. He decided to invest heavily in a “technological shock” to jolt his country into the 21st century. This meant, among other things, that he’d make sure everyone in the workforce could handle a computer and use the Internet effectively.
This could transform Portuguese society by giving people immediate access to world. It would open up huge opportunities that could make Portugal a richer ......

HAVE you, like me, spent the last few months dreaming of your holidays? As summer approached and the fears grew that you cannot rely on the Irish weather for anything approaching a sunny spell, I started -- at first idly and then with serious intent -- scanning the internet for possible bargains.

The mood in our house went something like this. First nonchalance: "Will we have a summer holiday this year with the recession and everything?" This moved quickly on to wistfulness: "It would be really nice to get away." Then on to justification: "I genuinely need a summer holiday." Finally, we arrived at desperation: "Book, book anything -- we've got to get away, who cares about the money."

It was thus buoyed up by thoughts of sunshine and dining al fresco that I first visited holidaylettings.co.uk , searching for a holiday home in Spain to rent for my family. It's a website where villa and apartment owners advertise their properties directly to the public, cutting out the middlemen and keeping the costs down. On it we found the perfect house,...

Buyers considering buying property in France and Spain need to also take a good look at Portugal. The real estate market in Portugal has been quietly booming and remains a good strong place to invest in property abroad. For those who are seeking Golf property Portugal is second to none. The future is bright for Portuguese real estate as the economy grows and direct inward investment in the property market increases. So why else buy property in Portugal? .....

(Budget Travel) -- Here's a snapshot of Portugal's defining experiences: beaches, cities, and food and wine. Get a sense of which ones fit your travel style and your budget.
Sandy beaches dot Portugal's rugged coastline.
Find a secluded beach

The Algarve, southern Portugal's balmy riviera, sees nothing but blue sky 300 days of the year. Admire the ocean views from the roof terrace at Dianamar, in the whitewashed old center of Albufeira, just a block from the beach. Rooms are simple, but all have private terraces, and the price includes a generous breakfast buffet and afternoon cake (doubles from $65).

The most dramatic coastline is along the drive to the medieval fortress town of Lagos. (Cars can be rented for around $30 a day in Albufeira; book online with companies like Europcar.) Between Praia de Dona Ana and Porto do Mós, the cliffs have been broken by the wind and sea into jagged rock formations pierced by blowholes and grottoes. Secret half-moon bays of golden sand lie hidden from view from all but the ocean.

An hour beyond Lagos is Europe's southwesternmost point: Cabo São Vicente, a cape whose......

The worldwide credit crunch and weak pound is squeezing the second home market in Portugal. Fred Hurley, of leading independent mortgage broker Mortgages4Portugal, offers some money-saving advice...
There is no doubt that the worldwide credit crunch, which has devastated equity markets and banking sectors in particular, has had repercussions in Portugal. One mortgage lender has pulled out of the non-resident mortgage market altogether and another has reduced the terms available to non-residents.

There has been a similar tightening of the rules being applied by some of Portugal's leading banks in the availability of mortgages to non-residents.The reasons for this are twofold: ......
